Meet Dr. Makins

Periodontist Patrick C. Makins DDSSan Angelo’s first and only Board Certified Periodontist, Patrick C. Makins, DDS was born in Lubbock, Texas.  He earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, TX and completed his graduate studies in Periodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas while obtaining a Master of Science in Dentistry from Baylor University.  In addition to the full time practice of periodontics in San Angelo, Dr. Makins has given numerous lectures and presentations before local, regional and national dental associations, as well as teaching part time at Howard College School of Dental Hygiene.  He has had articles published in the Texas Dental Journal and the Canadian Dental Journal Oral Health.

Recognized by his peers as a leader in Dentistry, Dr. Makins has served as President of the Southwest Society of Periodontists, the Texas Society of Periodontists and the San Angelo District Dental Society.  He was nominated for Texas Dentist of the Year in 1987 and honored as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists in 1991.  He was selected as a “Super Dentist” by his dental colleagues for 15 consecutive years (2004 through 2018) according to Texas Monthly Magazine’s Best Dentists in Texas.

Dr. Makins is an active member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church and has served his community on the board of directors of West Texas Boys Ranch, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, and the San Angelo West Rotary Club.  He was chosen Rotarian of the Year in 1984 and again in 2004 for his coordination of Rotary’s support for Fort Concho’s Living History Stables  and the Fort Concho Cavalry.

Dr. Makins is married, has two children and four grandchildren.  He enjoys participating in his grandchildren’s activities, playing the guitar and singing with his wife Suzy, horseback riding and traveling.

Meet Dr. Teitelbaum

Periodontist Dr. Austin TeitelbaumDr. Austin Teitelbaum grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas. He attended Texas Christian University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry as well as a minor in Spanish. Following graduation, he moved to Houston to attend the University of Texas School of Dentistry. While there, he developed an interest in diseases of the periodontium and oral rehabilitation. After obtaining his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in Houston, this interest led him to pursue specialty training in Periodontics at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans. This three year intensive periodontal residency program included advanced education in the disciplines of dental implant surgery, managing oral inflammation and esthetic and plastic oral surgery.

Dr. Teitelbaum’s philosophy of treatment is to provide quality oral healthcare while keeping the patient’s comfort a priority. His patients will always be well informed of their treatment options and will have the final decision in which choice is best for their needs.

When not treating patients, Dr. Teitelbaum enjoys spending time with his wife and their three children, being involved at church, hunting, snowboarding, TCU football and participating in medical missions.

Meet the Staff

Sylvia Smith, RN, RDA

Sylvia Smith, RN, RDASylvia Smith is the office manager for the periodontal practice of Dr. Patrick Makins. She graduated from Angelo State University with an Associate in Applied Science Degree and a Bachelor of Science Degree. Sylvia is currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas. Sylvia has worked with Dr. Makins for a total of 28 years. She started with his practice as a periodontal assistant and has worked at several positions in the office. She is knowledgeable in dental, periodontal, and implant treatment. Sylvia is available to help with any insurance questions or treatment concerns that you may have.

Virginia Matlock, RDH

Virginia Matlock, RDHVirginia was raised in Colorado City, Texas. Her small town roots help her to be very personable with her patients. She is a 2012 graduate of Howard College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene and a member of the Texas Dental Hygiene Association. She is happily married to Jared Matlock, they have one daughter, and they love Jesus! Virginia began working with Dr. Makins in January 2016. She loves what she does, and enjoys getting to know her patients and their stories while providing the best possible care.

Stephanie Timmons, RDH

Stephanie Timmons, RDHStephanie was born and raised in Big Spring, Texas. She graduated Suma cum Laude from Howard College in May 2005 with an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene Degree. After graduation, she moved to San Angelo and began working for Dr. Makins in July 2005. Stephanie is a member of her professional organization, The Texas Dental Hygienist’s Association, and is active on the state and local level. Stephanie believes in delivering the highest quality of care to all her patients. She also loves the personal relationships she has been able to develop with her patients.

Susie White, RDA

Susie White, RDASusie White started working in oral surgery 28 years ago as an assistant in the office and in the operating room. Susie also worked as an office manager in a general dentistry practice until coming to work for Dr. Makins in 2007 in periodontics. Susie’s husband has been active duty Air Force for 19 years and Susie, her husband, and two children are happy to be retiring in San Angelo. Susie’s training has included Certified Oral Surgical Assistant, Radiology Certified, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Nitrous Oxide Certification, CPR Certified, and now a Registered Dental Assistant in the State of Texas. Susie enjoys patient interaction and is happy to answer any questions patients may have.

Rosie Flores, RDA

Rosie Flores, RDAA native of San Angelo, Rosie is a proud mother of three children and a grandmother of six. Prior to joining Dr. Makins in 2004 as an assistant, she had the pleasure of working for and learning from some of the top general dentists in this area. Rosie’s thirty years of experience included employment by the State of Texas on a mobile dental unit and at Goodfellow Airforce Base on the Onsite Dental unit. Rosie is trained and certified in all required areas and although she finds the periodontal aspect of dentistry fascinating, she finds at the end of the day that comforting her patients is the most rewarding.
